REPORTE DE SITUACION NO. 1

Evento: Erupción de Volcán de Pacaya en Guatemala

ANTECEDENTES

De acuerdo con un boletín oficial del Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología,

Meteorología e Hidrología, INSIVUMEH; a las 16:00 horas del día 27 de mayo, se registraron explosiones cada segundo que alcanzaron hasta 500 metros de altura sobre el cráter del Volcán Pacaya, ubicado a 47 kilómetros de la ciudad capital. El volcán expulsó lava incandescente y piedras de regular tamaño y columnas de ceniza llegaron hasta 1 mil 500 metros de altura, afectando las aldeas El Rodeo, El Patrocinio, San Francisco de Sales, Calderas, Los Pocitos y San Vicente Pacaya, que pertenecen al departamento de Escuintla al sur del país. En horas de la noche se reportó la caída de ceniza en todo el departamento de Guatemala y Escuintla, ocasionando nerviosismo en diferentes sectores de la población y generando caos en el tráfico vehicular y accidentes de tránsito.

SITUACION ACTUAL

La actividad eruptiva del volcán Pacaya, la Secretaría Ejecutiva de la Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres –SE-CONRED; declaró Alerta Roja en la zona afectada y activó el Equipo de Respuesta Inmediata –ERI; y se realizó una evacuación de familias de comunidades cercanas al volcán.

Se reportan más de 1750 personas evacuadas y 600 personas albergadas en salones municipales, iglesias cristianas y católicas cercanas, veinte heridos, cuatro casas completamente quemadas por la lava. El Gobierno y Ejército apoyaron las labores de evacuación, sin embargo hay personas de algunas comunidades que se resisten a dejar sus casas por temor a saqueos. Los cuerpos de socorro se encargan de la búsqueda y rescate de cuatro personas que estaban cercanas a la zona de la erupción. Se reporta la muerte de un periodista que murió a causas de la actividad volcánica.

El Gobierno de la República de Guatemala declaró Estado de Calamidad para los departamentos de Escuintla, Sacatepéquez y Guatemala. El Ministerio de educación suspendió las clases en la zona afectada y zonas cercanas al volcán y el Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora permanece cerrado y los vuelos internacionales son desviados a El Salvador.

Además el servicio meteorológico del INSIVUMEH, informó que hay un sistema fuerte de baja presión continua casi estacionario entre la frontera de México y Guatemala, que está generando lluvias intensas en la mayor parte del país principalmente en la región Sur y Meseta Central, incrementándose este día viernes 28 de mayo, lo que podría convertirse en Depresión Tropical. También el día 27 se reportaron dos sismos de regular intensidad, el último de ellos muy cercano a la zona del Volcán de Pacaya.

La erupción estromboliana, se mantiene en el volcán Pacaya, se observan constantes explosiones acompañadas de material piroclástico que se dispersa en la zona del volcán, también columnas de ceniza gruesa que eleva a 1000 metros de altura y está siendo trasportada hasta 20 y 30 kilómetros al Nor-Oeste. Aunque por el momento el rango de erupción es baja no se descarta un incremento similar al de ayer por lo que se deben de tomar las precauciones del caso. Continúa cayendo arena volcánica en menor cantidad.

Hoy la ciudad capital y municipios cercanos a la zona cercana al volcán están cubiertos de arena volcánica y se iniciaron actividades de limpieza por autoridades y vecinos.

ACCIONES DE VISION MUNDIAL

La Directora Nacional de Visión Mundial Guatemala, activó la red de emergencias, incluyendo el monitoreo constante de la actividad volcánica. El Responsable de Emergencias de la Oficina Nacional realizó un monitoreo para evaluar los posibles daños que pudieran resultar por la caída de la ceniza en donde hay presencia de PDA en los departamentos de Chimaltenango y Guatemala, sin reportarse novedades al momento.

La Oficina Nacional está operando con el 75 % de su personal, debido a que algunos colaboradores viven en la zona sur de la ciudad capital, en donde el acumulado de cenizas es muy prominente y ha sido la zona más afectada.

No hay llamado de apoyo internacional. El Gobierno está implementando la respuesta a la emergencia con recursos interinstitucionales, la emergencia está bajo control de las autoridades del Gobierno y Visión Mundial Guatemala no tiene PDA en las zonas afectadas.

SITUATION REPORT No. 1

EVENT: Pacaya Volcano erupted

Time: 9:00 a.m.

BACKGROUND

According with an official bulletin from National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH for its initials in Spanish) at 16:00 hours, some explosions were registered every second, reaching 1640 feet over the crater of the Pacaya Volcano, located 29 miles from the capital city. Volcano threw incandescent lava and medium rocks, and the ashes columns reached more than 4,900 feet and went to West and Southwest over the towns of El Rodeo, El Patrocinio, San Francisco de Sales, Calderas, Los Pocitos and San Vicente Pacaya, on Escuintla, on the south of the country. During the first night hours, volcanic sand felt all over Guatemala and Escuintla departments, causing nervousness within the population and traffic chaos caused some accidents.

CURRENT SITUATION

Because of the Pacaya volcano erupting activity, the National Coordinator for the Reduction of Disasters (CONRED for its initials in Spanish) stated RED ALERT on the affected area and the Rapid Response Team were activated and at this time families of the near villages were evacuated.

There is a report of 1750 persons evacuated and 600 persons on shelters in different government facilities and churches. There are 20 persons injured, fours houses totally burned from the lava.

The Government and the Army are supporting the evacuation and the first aid teams are helping to search four people missed around the eruption area. A journalist is unfortunately dead.

Government authorities stated Calamity State on Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Guatemala departments. Education Ministry decided to suspend classes and the International Airport “La Aurora” is closed and all the international flights are being directed to El Salvador.

In addition, INSIVUMEH reported a low pressure system is stationary over the Mexico-Guatemala border and it is causing hard rain almost all over the country, mainly the South and the Central area. This is increasing today, Friday, May 28, and it could be turned to a Tropical Depression.

Two small earthquakes were reported yesterday, the last one had its epicentre near to the Pacaya Volcano area.

Pacaya Volcano is still erupting and these are throwing pyroclastic material around the volcano. Ashes columns are up to 3280 feet and it is being moved to 12-18 miles Northwest direction. Even though the eruption intensity is low, a similar increasing like yesterday is not ruled out so all the necessary caution is important. Volcanic sand is still falling over the city.

Today, all the city and the near towns around the volcano area are covered with volcanic sand and authorities and neighbors started the cleaning actions.

WORLD VISION ACTIONS

World Vision Guatemala’s National Director activated the emergency network, including the constant tracking of the volcanic activity. Emergency Response Manager of the National Office tracked the possible damages caused by the volcanic sand in the areas were Area Development Programs have coverage in Chimaltenango and Guatemala. Up to now, there are no damages reported.

National Office is working with the 75% of the personnel, because some of the staff lives in the South area of the city, where a lot of sand is accumulated and it has been more affected.

There is not a call for international support. Government is taking care of the emergency response with different institutions resources. The emergency is under Government authorities control and World Vision Guatemala does not have any ADP in the affected area.

All the cars gat covered by volcanic sand and that situation caused a lot of troubles to traffic.

South of the city was the most affected by the volcanic sand, and there is where World Vision Guatemala National Office is located.
